April 30, 2009

swine_fluI must admit that when I first started hearing about the swine flu outbreak, I pretty much ignored it. I thought it would be just another story for the media to make larger than what it really is.

Yesterday, the WHO (World Health Organization) raised it’s pandemic alert to 5 which is the second-highest level, warning of widespread human infection. I didn’t know there was such a thing as the WHO, did you?

Schools are being cancelled all over the world and U.S. government agencies abroad are not operating in some countries.

What are your thoughts about this swine flu outbreak? How concerned are you about it? Are you nervous about it at all?

BUSINESS AS USUAL.NO WEARING OF MASKS AND THE LIKE. WE ARE HEARING ABOUT IT FROM THE MEDIA . WE NEVER PANIC. THE GOVT TAKES CARE OF THESE THINGS AND THEY MOSTLY SUCCEED IN LIMITING THE DAMAGE.THE EARLIER EPIDEMICS HAVENT DONE MUCH DAMAGE AS FEARED. I GUESS IT TAKES LONGER TO PICK UP THE MOMENTUM IN A TROPICAL COUNTRY .

Like you, I generally take little heed in the general hysteria. Remember the bird flu a few years back? Sure, it was bad, but I think the media made it much worse than it needed to be. That’s how I felt about swine flu.

That is, until I heard that several students at a university in my hometown, just an hour south of me, were taken ill with what is highly suspected to be swine flu. Now I’m a little bit nervous – but still not ready to break out the surgical mask.

It’s never so bad until you realize that it’s hitting close to home – literally.

Nah, I’m not too concerned. Actually a good bout of Swine Flu might just be the jump-start to that diet I’ve been trying to get started . 😀

      ROFLMAO!!!

    • April 30, 2009 1:06 PM

I had some sort of plague – I’m pretty sure it was TB – a couple months back, and it was the best diet ever. I lost a good ten pounds in the span of a few days. I hadn’t thought about Swine Flu in that light yet. See? There’s a silver lining to ever cloud!

      • April 30, 2009 1:07 PM

…or every cloud. I can spell. Really.

      • April 30, 2009 6:09 PM

“A silver lining to every cloud” HA! You kill me Megan!!!

I wasn’t worried at first and a large part of me still isn’t, but my daughter came home yesterday with a note from school. There has been a case (and another one suspected) in a neighboring school district about a half hour from us. Great! I told Trinity to wash her hands, wash wash wash, cover her mouth if she coughs/sneezes, and DON’T SHARE anything with anyone! Guess what she woke up with this morning? A stuffy/runny nose and a nice cough. I’m a little paranoid, but won’t stop my life b/c she has a cold (which passed through everyone but her about a month ago) When they are telling us not to go to the doc unless you have X Y Z symptoms, we can’t stay home and never go out b/c we “think” we might catch it. I think it’s amazing how WHO and all the CDC’s around the globe already have been in contact with each other to help stop the spread. Why does it take a possible pandemic to get all the regions of the world concerned about the health of it’s people?

  5. April 30, 2009 10:00 AM

I’m not worried. Here in England it seems very far away, and they said it wasn’t likely to make you die, I think.
I didn’t know what the hell the WHO was until today. Until now, it was just those people who did “My Generation”.

  6. April 30, 2009 10:07 AM

I’m respectful of it and will be careful and I’m somewhat concerned but at this point I won’t let it run my life. I do wash my hands a lot already. The “regular” flu kills a lot of people each year also but we don’t hear about those. It was explained last night on the news we watch and they were explaining the myths and truths and while I feel we should be aware and careful, I don’t think it’s time yet to hide and quit living our lives.

  7. April 30, 2009 12:09 PM

I just turned everything I normally do “up a notch” to be extra careful, why not?

  8. April 30, 2009 12:13 PM

I agree with Joy about it being like the regular flu. I think the media is causing way to much hype about it. The state of Texas has suspended all school sports and UIL events for two weeks. Why don’t we do this during normal Flu season?!

I feel bad for the people who are dying in Mexico but remember their health care and living conditions are not as good as what we have available to us here in the United States.

  9. April 30, 2009 12:37 PM

I agree with most all of you! I believe the media is of course making this out to be worse than what it really is but I did become more concerned when the threat level was elevated yesterday. I don’t think it’s time to break out the masks yet or anything but try to be a little more cautious by hand washing etc.

Let’s all just hope that it is kept under control.

shut down the damn borders! Seriously! Lock it down like Willie Wonkas workshop..nobody ever goes in and nobody ever goes out! I don’t care that Mr. Obama says that it would be like shutting the barn door after the horse already got out. OK shut the damn door so the rest of the animals don’t get out!

I don’t plan on doing anything different and I’ve heard the surgical masks for the public aren’t going to do anything. You are going to need a full suit of body armor or a friggin plastic bubble. Those masks don’t cover the eyes or the ears and germs enter your body through them too..along with just being on your skin unless you hose down every 10 ft or so.

I want anybody who is sick to stay the hell away from me though and I’ll do the same 😉

    thank you!

  11. April 30, 2009 4:09 PM

ooooh and you can’t call it the swine flu as of yesterday cuz the pig farmers were getting their bibs in a bunge! It’s the I1N1 or some dumb shit like that.

    • April 30, 2009 6:13 PM

That sounds more like a secret government project of some kind. LOL

A friend of mine told me a joke…. Two hundred years ago people would have said that we would have a black president when pigs fly, and now….. swine flu.

On a serious note it really sucks that people are getting sick and hopefully we can find a way to stop it, and soon.

    • April 30, 2009 11:33 PM

FOR SURE!! I just heard on the local news earlier tonight that there are nine confirmed cases of the flu in the county I live in. That’s getting a little close for comfort now!!
