Cubs Split Series With Rockies

April 16, 2009

chicago_cubs_baseballWith several key players out with injries on Wednesday, the Cubs could get little going offensively against old teammate Jason Marquis in a 5-2 loss at Wrigley Field.

Rich Harden appeared to be in a good groove in the first inning on Wednesday. The Cubs pitcher struck out the side, needing 13 pitches to retire the Colorado Rockies. But Garrett Atkins saw that many pitches plus one in a 14-pitch at-bat to open the second, and Harden struggled to get through the inning, throwing 35 pitches, including one that Jason Marquis slapped into center with the bases loaded for a two-run, two-out single. It was Marquis’ hit that helped the Rockies go on to beat Harden and the Cubs, 5-2.

Marquis, whom the Cubs dealt to the Rockies on Jan. 6 for reliever Luis Vizcaino, gave up one run on five hits over seven innings for the win. Micah Hoffpauir delivered a pinch-hit RBI double with two outs in the fifth and Derrek Lee belted his first homer leading off the ninth for the Cubs.

Harden (0-1), who struck out 10 in six innings in his first outing of the year against Milwaukee, fanned eight in three innings on Wednesday. He walked four and gave up five hits, including Seth Smith’s one-out homer in the third, which opened a 3-0 Rockies lead. Todd Helton followed Smith with a double and then scored on an error by Alfonso Soriano, who overran Atkins’ single.

Rookie David Patton, who was in the Rockies’ system and was acquired by the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft last December, made his Wrigley Field debut, and struck out three over two scoreless innings.

The Cubs begin a four games series with the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday at Wrigley.

Sorry to hear about the Twins. It’s VERY early so maybe they will start turning around here soon!

Not a bad start at all, no. I was hoping they would sweep the Rockies but no luck there. They start a four game series with St. Louis today in Chicago.
