Just Curious – 04/02/09

April 2, 2009

garyLet’s do something a little different today! Let’s turn the tables so to speak on the “Just Curious” question today. Instead of me asking a question and you answering, you ask me the questions and I answer them. Is there something you have wondered about? Something you have wanted to ask me? Something you have been “Just Curious” about? Now is the time to ask……

Warning: I will be brutally honest so don’t ask a question you don’t want the answer too! 😉

I actually stole this idea from Luisa at Believe In Yourself but I don’t think she will mind. 😀 Hopefully she will be flattered that I liked her idea so much!!! 😉

What kind of camera and lens do you use?

  2. April 2, 2009 2:01 AM

I shoot with a Canon 40D and own the following lenses….

    Canon 100mm f2.8 macro
    Canon 50mm f1.8
    Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6
    Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 macro
    Tamron 75-300mm f4-5.6
    Tamron 28-80mm f4-5.6

I don’t use the shitty Tamron lenses but I still own them. I may use the Tamron 75-300mm once or twice a year. I shoot pretty much EVERYTHING with the Canon 100mm, Canon 50mm and Sigma 24-70mm. When I need to go wider, I shoot with my Canon 18-55mm.

      ……………..macro – dir-ty!

and those “f”ing lenses sound like they should be on the fujita scale!

      ……..must get more coffee!

ROFLMAO!! See, there’s that snarkyness that we all love. LOL

    Now my question:

What is a typical day like for you? Like start when you get up. Are you a follow the routine kind of guy or do you go with the flow?

    • April 2, 2009 2:24 PM

Both really. A day in the life of Gary eh? Ok, here goes…..

Wake up in the morning and check for any pains. Stumble into bathroom and urinate for about 10 minutes. Throw on clothes and SPRINT to the coffee maker. Start brewing coffee and go outside to the back yard and smoke first cig of the day while coffee is brewing. After nicotine fix, return to kitchen for coffee. Take first sip and start to come to life. Hit power button on laptop. Get breakfast for Logan and search house for dog poop and pee. Take dog outside and clean dog mess if needed.

Remember that “thing” I do that you can set your watch by? Now is the time for that. Sometimes with my laptop and sometimes without. Just depends on how long I feel I will be in the bathroom. While doing my business, look over at laundry heap from day before overflowing from the laudry basket and wish we could just all go naked. Finsih business in bathroom and take laundry heap to the laundry room in the basement and load washer. Return to main level of the house and clean up breakfast mess. Bring dog inside house. Check to see what I have planned for dinner and figure out when I need to start cooking it. Plan tomorrow’s dinner and bring meat out of freezer and place into refrigerator to thaw. Go outside and smoke once again. Return inside and sit down with laptop. Check email and blog. Begin replying to comments left on blog and listen for washer. When washer goes off, go downstairs, move laundry from washer into dryer. Load next load into washer and come back upstairs. Sit back down and continue commenting on my blog and begin visiting blogs I enjoy. Take dog out. Bring dog back in. Sit back down and blog more. Smoke another cig in back yard. Return inside and send a text message to my wife’s cell phone wishing her to have a nice day and let her know I love her. This is ALL done while sipping my coffee of course. 😀

Return downstairs and empty clean clothes from dryer into laundry basket. Take clothes from washer and load into dryer. Load HOPEFULLY last load of the day into washer and star it. Bring clean clothes upstairs. Fold clothes and place on couch in living room according to proper owner. Smoke again and return to blogging for a short time. Make lunch for Logan. Take dog out and bring dog back in. Make any phone calls I need to make and think if I have to pick up any kids later in the day or if they will be coming home on the bus as normal. One is in sports and another is in Driver Education after school and can’t ride the bus home so I may need to pick them up. Clean up mess from lunch. Blog a little and listen for dryer. Return to basement and unload clean clothes from dryer into laundry basket. Remove clothes from washer and load into dryer. Return upstairs and fold clothes and place into appropriate piles that were created fromt he last load. Take a shower, shave, get dressed and gel hair. Take dog out and bring dog back in. Return to basement and bring HOPEFULLY last load up, fold and place into proper piles. Dispense clothes to rightful owners into correct rooms. Towels in linen closet, hang up my clothes and my wife’s clothes and place others in drawers.

Begin cooking dinner. My dinners normally take 2 hours to cook. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Older kids come home from school and ask 1000 questions. I answer each to the best of my abilities. Continue cooking dinner. Tell boys to stop fighting and acting like monkey’s in a zoo. When asking nicely fails, begin threats of groundings and extra chores to do. Continue cooking. Greet wife at the door when she gets home from work. Give her a smile and a kiss. Ask how her day was and hopefully have dinner ready or very close to ready for consumption. Sit with family and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Pat myself on the back for another well done meal. LOL

After dinner, make coffee and smoke outside again. Return inside to find boys acting like caged monkey’s again and make more threats of groundings and sometimes dismembering. Sit with wife on couch and discuss our day all while being interrupted multiple times by each boy asking a silly question that they already know that answer too but still feel the need to ask. Get Logan ready for bed, and deal the with fit he is throwing. Help wife babysit older kids with the chores they have to do. Make more threats of grounding and dismemberment. Watch some TV with wife and retire to bedroom together. Kids go to sleep and we spoon and watch TV in bed. Sometimes we make love and sometimes we don’t. More often we do though. 😉

Wife goes to sleep and I enjoy a little me time in the living room blogging and watching Food Network. I get posts ready for the next day and post them shortly after midnight. I have a little “midnight snack” and go to bed at around 2:00am.

Somewhere during the day I take a “Photo Of The Day” and edit it for posting.

      Get up and repeat.

Ok first off all I would like to applaud you for what you are doing in running the house. Seriously no average joe man could do that. So you deserve some sort of award for it.(and I’ll be looking for one) Second of all that list made me tired and minus the meal cooking (for such a time as this)…that’s MY FREAKIN’ DAY! (oh yeah and minus the smoke)! 😉
Now we need more coffee.. you sit and I’ll make it..this time..next time it’s your turn 😉

        • April 3, 2009 4:23 PM

Why thank you JJ! I must admit it was hard for me at first but over time I slipped right in to the job. I really like it!! Award? Your going to give me an award for being a house dad? LOL! Awesome!!

So we have something in common then having the same kind of day! ROFLMAO! I don’t think we are alone on that one. 😀

We DO need more coffee! Aw man, SOMEONE ELSE is going to make the coffee instead of ME? That’s like a dream come true!!!! Enjoying a cup of coffee without any effort. BLISS!!! Next time I will be MORE than happy to brew us up a good pot of “nectar from the gods”. 😉

What is one regret you have had in your life, so far????

    • April 2, 2009 12:51 PM

I would have to say quitting baseball. I used to play baseball like you wouldn’t believe. It was something I was REALLY good at and enjoyed. I was a pitcher and could throw like no others my age. I was throwing curve balls and sliders in 4th grade. Coaches on the opposing teams were always amazed. LOL I was in the news paper A LOT and it was just something I was very proud of. To me, there was no better feeling than going up against the “hitter” of the opposing team and watching him take that long walk back to the dugout from home plate afer I struck him out.

I wish I would have never quit. 😦

I think the other day you already told me more than I’d ever need to know about you. My head is still reeling!

  6. April 2, 2009 9:19 AM

Just for the record. I love my tamron lens. It’s on my camera 99% of the time. Why don’t you like yours?

How long have you been married?

    • April 2, 2009 12:45 PM

I don’t like mine for a couple of reasons. I’m just NOT happy with the quality of the lens. The lens elements or glass of the lens are sub par. Vignetting is a HUGE problem with the cheap glass shooting wide open or at the largest focal distance. The other reason is because the lens is just not fast enough for me. I go to great lengths to NOT use flash in my photography. I use available light 98% of the time. Because of this, I need a lens that has a nice HIGH aperature of 2.8 or higher for low light situations. The largest aperature of my Tamron lens is f4 which is just not enough for me. I can only use f4 when the lens is wide open also and that is when the vignetting occurs the most. NOT GOOD. 🙂

My wife and I just celebrated our 5 year anniversary March, 19th of this year. 🙂

Gary, you seem to be slacking answering the questions!!! For less thank $1000, what kind of camera would you recommend if you couldn’t recommend the canon 40D??

    • April 2, 2009 12:38 PM

I always have been somewhat of a slacker. 🙂 I would recommend the Canon Rebel for a camera less than $1000.00! I have had a couple of them and they are great “little” cameras.

    • April 3, 2009 9:27 AM

raising hand …..for less than $300 what kind of digital camera would take good pictures like this ..I’m afraid I already know the answer 😦

      • April 3, 2009 4:39 PM

I’m afraid you do know the answer, yes. I don’t know of any camera in the $300 range that would give you photos like a DSLR camera similar to mine. 😦

However, I will share a few of things with you…..

        1. I once won $1000.00 in a photo contest with a digital point and shoot camera competing against people using cameras like I use today. The camera doesn’t make the photo, the photographer makes the photo. I envision what I want the final photo to look like BEFORE I actually fire the shutter.

        2. My photos don’t look the way you see them right out of the camera. Taking a good photo with your camera is only half the photo. The second half of any good photo is the editing process. What used to be done in a darkroom in the days of film is now done with Photoshop or other image editing software packages. I use Photoshop and it is the “standard” for today’s photographers. Knowing photoshop is just as important if not more important than what camera you are using.

        3. KNOW your camera! Know it inside and out! KNOWING your camera will let you know it’s limitations. You might view a photo in your mind before you snap the shutter but it may not be possible with the camera you are using. If you know the limitations of your camera, you can adjust whatever needs to be done to get the photo that YOU invision. Don’t let the camera give you what it wants. Make the camera give you what YOU invision by knowing your camera.

        Hope this helps!!!

        • April 3, 2009 8:27 PM

yes that does help!! Thank you. I see lots of things that I think would make a good photo and now I may just have to start taking shots of them. I work with Paint.net. I find I liked it better than photoshop…but that’s just me. I have like 5 different photo things on my computer that I use depending on what I want to do with the pictures.

          • April 3, 2009 10:13 PM

Good! I’m glad that helps and your very welcome. I’m not familiar with paint.net…..if you like that better than photoshop, go for it!

If you have any questions about photography, don’t hesitate to ask!!!

When do you find time to shoot those photos and put it in your blog on the same day?

    • April 2, 2009 12:34 PM

MOST of the time I shoot the photo the day before to post for the next day. That gives me time to download the photo and edit it in photoshop. Sometimes I shoot it and post it in the same day but I don’t like to feel rushed. 🙂

Sometimes I will go somewhere and get a few shots that I like and use them all. Then I have a few ready in advance.

OK HERE IS A QUESTION FOR YOU TO PONDER! WHAT TIME IN YOUR LIFE WOULD YOU CONSIDER WAS THE BEST TIME RANGING FROM THREE TO FIVE YEAR PERIOD??

    • April 2, 2009 12:53 PM

What do you mean? Are you talking about my photo?

  11. April 2, 2009 2:03 PM

Hmm gonna think about this one. For now though…what did you have for lunch??

    • April 2, 2009 2:27 PM

I had nothing. It’s pretty rare that I eat lunch to be honest. 😀

      • April 2, 2009 2:56 PM

Me either. I haven’t eaten a single thing today. I’m always curious to what other eat and wish I could eat too.

        • April 2, 2009 3:09 PM
